Welcome to Death By Gluttony

death by gluttony

Hi everyone. Hope you’re doing good. I’m so glad to see you here.

I’m Sonia. I’m 26 years old and hail from New Delhi, India. I have been blogging for the past 4 years.

This website is my safe haven where I curate tried and tested recipes and share my travel experiences. I love everything about food be it cooking myself or eating out.
I pursued my graduation in commerce and worked full time in the field of marketing. That’s when I learned about the power of Social Media. I always knew that I wanted to do something in the food space. I felt more fulfilled by seeing the positive reactions of my family and friends after eating my baked goods.
Apart from baking, I like to go swimming, read books, binge watch shows/movies, and travel occasionally. These are my simple pleasures.

How it all started

My love for documenting my food journey started on Instagram. Being an avid food connoisseur, I used to check out new restaurants once or twice every week. I wanted to share my personal experience and the best of food with an audience who share the same love for food as me.

I gained an interest in cooking in high school when I used to help my mother and grandmother in the kitchen. That’s when I learned the new techniques and basics of Indian cooking.

Gradually I discovered the world of baking. With a boom in online food content in the past 5 years, it became easy to access new recipes recommended by the best in the industry. That is when I started to invest in important baking tools and ingredients.

I really hope you enjoy the recipes I’ve posted here. They are foolproof and loved by my family. You can find different types of recipes be it Eggless, No-bake, or Indian food recipes.

MORE ABOUT ME

Why did you start a food blog?

The idea of starting a food blog came to me when my sister went to Mumbai for her post-graduation. She used to crave for homemade food and my sweet delights so I used to send her written recipes.
It became a little difficult to keep a track of all those recipes as we lost the photos and WhatsApp chats due to technical issues in our phones. That’s when I thought to start a blog where I can document my recipes and food journey. I keep on improvising and updating the recipes every now and then. What started as a hobby became a full-fledged website which is now used by my friends, relatives and my amazing internet buddies to make easy and tasty recipes.

Are your recipes original?

I started cooking and baking by following some talented chefs and bloggers in the online space. Before that and even now I learn different recipes from my mother. Over a period of time, I started understanding the science behind baking. I refer to numerous videos and posts before cooking something. There are thousands of outstanding recipes out there and I love to try them. I respect my fellow food bloggers and YouTubers who put in so much effort to create delicious recipes.
I only post those recipes where I’ve improvised or tweaked the recipe to make it better. If I follow someone’s recipe and it turns out perfect, then I don’t post it on my website. If I want to share that recipe with my readers then I give credits to the original author.

Is this your Full-Time work?

I work part-time on my website. Youtube Channel takes a huge chunk of my day. Recording a video, editing it, and then writing a blog takes a lot of time. But I like to multitask so I keep on indulging in other hobbies and simultaneously work on my site.

Do you have a team?

No. I’m a one-woman show. LITERALLY.

I do the grocery shopping and prepare all the ingredients before shooting a video. Then I cook the food while adjusting the tripod simultaneously to capture the photos and videos.
After that I clean the mess I make before my mother gives me that look. Lol!
I edit my videos and write the blog post. After posting the content on my website and youtube channel, I manage the social media handles of my page. I occasionally take help from my mother when I’m cooking Indian food as she’s better than me in that field.

How I wish I could just cook and hire a professional who could shoot and edit the videos. But for now, I think I am able to handle everything. Being a type-A control freak, I like to keep an eye and coordinate everything myself. This has a bright side. I’ve acquired so many skills like making a website using WordPress, photography, video editing, and software like photoshop, analytics, etc.

Sustainable Eating

I strongly support sustainable cooking for a healthy lifestyle and a clean environment. After reading and understanding about sustainable living since the last one year, I became more conscious of my food choices. After lots of introspection, I curbed my food outings considerably and reduced my non-vegetarian food intake. Now I go out maybe twice or thrice a month and mainly consume vegetarian food. This has reduced my urge for fast food and has motivated me to cook at home regularly. If I crave something and I can find a good recipe online then I avoid going out at all. This combined with the consistent workout has contributed to my healthy lifestyle and fitness goals.

Easy tips for sustainable cooking.

  1. I plan my blog posts and YouTube videos depending on the availability of ingredients. For eg., If I purchase spring onions then I will cook 2-3 recipes that include it. This helps in planning recipes around fresh ingredients, reduces my shopping trips, and also avoid wastage.

  2. My emphasis is always on food and its taste rather than the presentation. I rarely use ingredients as side props and if I do, I make sure that not a single food item is wasted. Earlier I used to think it is important to invest in fancy props and cutleries. But now I understand that food is the boss.

  3. I only post recipes that are tried and tested. Although SEO and other algorithms expect one to post regularly for better reach. But I only post when I’m sure about the recipe, this helps in preserving the quality of the blog, reduces mental stress to churn out fresh content frequently, and prevents overeating.

  4. I have many dessert recipes on my website and Youtube Channel but they have been curated over a long period of time. I personally would not bake a dessert more than once every 10 days as it is consumed by me and my family. My mother is diabetic so I make sure we aren’t constantly consuming refined sugar, all-purpose flour, or any ingredient that can cause harm to our bodies in the long run. I would not advise my readers to bake desserts very often as no matter how tasty it is but refined sugar is not good for health. I would suggest using healthy alternatives like stevia.

  5. I grow some herbs and fruits in my backyard. I heavily use basil and parsley in my cooking so instead of buying it from markets, I grow them in my house. This helps in saving money, time, and reduces packaging waste.

  6. Avoid plastic as much as you can. Replace plastic straws with metal/paper, use cloth instead of clingfilm, use jute bag to buy groceries, and try to do grocery shopping once a week.

These small but effective steps in our everyday lives really help our environment and reduce our carbon footprint. My goal is to cook consciously, enjoy the best of food, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. More on Sustainable Living.
